Today Paul, Tara, and I had a lengthy date with PURCHASING. Paul spent all morning teaching us everything he has learned about the purchasing process in the foodservice and retail world. His thorough knowledge was apparent. He attributed this knowledge to many years of experience and a lot of networking with all the people who hold all the various jobs that we were discussing. Although at times it got confusing and cumbersome, Paul was patient with us and answered any questions that we had. I am glad that I had a bit of a background in this area from a class I took this past semester. The field trips in that class, especially to a distribution center, helped me to understand today's lesson much better!
After lunch, we were called into the kitchen to do what we do best--taste test! We sampled a pizza recipe that may be added to the fall menu as well as some food for the sky suite at the football stadium. I had been asked to get prices on some plastic containers earlier this week, and our food samples were served in samples of those containers. Tara and my final assignment from the kicthen is to take home the left over food and then bring back the empty bowls so that the kitchen staff can see how they hold up in the dishwasher. If there's one thing Tara and I like, it's free food!
We headed back down to the office and learned how to log in to our distributors' websites so that we could get started on our projects. I worked on comparing prices for cereals. I am in the process of emailing our foodservice representative to get a few samples so that we can do a product comparison with our kitchen managers.
Life is good and the sun is finally shining!
